The RAR is part of a series of chairs with a shell seat of polyester reinforced with glass fiber — a material developed by the US army in the second world war. Designed in 1948 for the New York Museum of Modern Art’s low-cost furniture design competition, the chairs were in production at US firm Herman Miller until 1968.
